The Morning Meal

The Morning Meal

Tasty morning noshing gets the Vegas day started right

Story by Bob Gourley

From delis that feature fresh bagels to full-blown buffets, the valley is full of terrific choices for breakfast. Here are a few spots that are guaranteed to get your day off to a great start.

Fluffy, smooth egg dishes are the norm at Grand Lux Café, an upscale cousin to the sprawling Cheesecake Factory chain. The two Las Vegas locations are nicely situated at the Venetian and Palazzo Hotels and feature not only a weekday breakfast with entrees but also an everyday buffet.

The list of morning favorites is punctuated with omelettes like the Fresh Garden that is full of healthy things like mushrooms, tomatoes, avocados, green onions, zucchini, Havarti cheese and sour cream. Diners can also build their own by choosing up to four selections. Caramel Banana-Nut French Toast is prepared with brioche bread topped with sauteed bananas, pecans and house made caramel sauce.

The high quality Express Breakfast is designed for those in a hurry. Fruits, granola, croissants, Danish, muffins, eggs, potatoes, fresh juice and coffee fill up the plate nicely.

Mon Ami Gabi, inside Paris Hotel and Casino, is well known for juicy steaks and perfectly prepared French fries. But they also serve a popular breakfast menu daily and brunch fare on the weekends. Not only is the food memorable, but the view of The Strip is also compelling. Opt for a seat in the atrium or outside on the patio and you can watch the Bellagio Water Fountain Show as a bonus.

They serve one of the best omelettes on the planet, the Mushroom. Stuffed inside perfectly prepared eggs are tender mushrooms and creamy Brie cheese. Breakfast potatoes and toast are included, but for a couple of bucks more order a chocolate croissant.

A quartet of eggs benedict selections is intriguing, including a gluten-free edition with Canadian bacon, hollandaise sauce and toast. Made-from-scratch waffles are highlighted with chocolate-hazelnut morsels topped with Nutella and whipped cream.

Towering waterfalls and a French breakfast are an unbeatable combination.

Paris Hotel and Casino is celebrating 15 years in business. One of the mainstays of early day dining is the buffet at Le Village. Since it opened, it has been a must-visit for many out-of-towners, with locals embracing it too.

One of the most popular hangouts is the crepe station, where friendly chefs prepare wafer-thin French delights to order. There are a variety of toppings including strawberries, bananas, cherries and rich sauces as well. The finished product is a meal in itself. But don't just stop there. Be sure to visit the pastry area too. Buttery chocolate croissants and other delicacies satisfy even the most voracious sweet tooth.

A meat station in the back of the large dining area is full of breakfast meats that are prepared constantly. A made-to-order omelettes bar is a plus, along with thin-sliced smoked salmon and an enlarged salad bar.

France comes to Vegas at Le Village.

Big portions and quality selections are two hallmarks of Weiss Restaurant, Deli and Bakery in Henderson. Classic Eggs Benedict features a pair of poached eggs covered by homemade hollandaise sauce that sits atop a Thomas’ English Muffin.

Potato latkes from a family recipe are delivered crispy with sour cream and applesauce. Three dishes are made up of homemade hash including the Hash Stack with Swiss cheese, green onions and horseradish sauce. Matzo makes an appearance two ways: straight up or with Matzo Brie and kosher salami served pancake style.

Bagels are another specialty; light, airy and delicious. A mixture of special flour, fresh eggs and buttermilk make up the recipe for scrumptious pancakes. French toast is constructed with fresh-baked challah bread smothered in a cinnamon-vanilla egg wash served with butter and syrup. It's wise to order the smaller portion.

Take some baked goods home for more good eating.
