If you’re a golf fan, you’ve probably got the week of October 3 thru 9, 2022, already circled on your calendar. On those days, the golf world spotlight will shine brightly on Las Vegas as the Shriners Children’s Open comes to town and will see many of the PGA TOUR’s biggest stars take on the newly-renovated fairways and greens of TPC Summerlin.

For Patrick Lindsey, tournament director, the 2022 event promises to be bigger and better than ever. “It’s hard to say who will be committing at this point, but I will promise that we will do our best to make sure the field has the world’s best competing,” Lindsey says. “The great thing about Las Vegas right now is the number of great players who live here and want to be part of their hometown event.”

The Shriners Children’s Open first came to Las Vegas in 1983 when it was known as the Panasonic Las Vegas Pro-Celebrity Classic. Fuzzy Zoeller won the inaugural event and pocketed $135,000 for his win. How times have changed. With a purse of $8-million up for grabs this year to go along with 500 FedEx Cup points and the event being held in Las Vegas…it’s easy to see why the pros circle these dates on their calendars.

Some of the best to ever play the game have teed it up in Las Vegas including the likes of Tiger Woods (his first victory on the PGA TOUR came right here in 1996), Greg Norman, Jim Furyk (a three-time winner), and many others who have put a victory here on their resume. This year, past winners like Sungjae Im (the defending champ), Martin Laird (2020), Kevin Na (a hometown favorite and the winner in 2019), Bryson DeChambeau (2018) and Patrick Cantlay (2017), are likely to highlight a stellar field. Im won in 2021 in high style, shooting a bogey-free, nine-under-par 62 in the final round to win for the second time on the PGA TOUR.

TPC Summerlin was designed by Bobby Weed with help from Fuzzy Zoeller. The layout rolls seamlessly through the desert with risk/reward holes that challenge the PGA TOUR pros, especially the final four holes which can make or break the round and change the tournament outcome. Two of those – the 15th, a driveable par-4, and the 16th, a very reachable par-5 -- are holes where birdies (and sometimes eagles) are plentiful. But if the pros aren’t careful over the final four holes, disaster lurks as the desert landscape and water (on the 16th, 17th and 18th) can jump up to bite players.

Lindsey said he’s excited about the updates TPC Summerlin has been undergoing this year. “There are all new fairways and greens. It’s an exciting time for TPC Summerlin, and we are looking forward to communicating the updates to the players and eventually showcasing the course to them later this fall. I know the players will be impressed with the product and will be especially excited to play on the new greens.”

If you’re planning on heading out to the tournament, Lindsey wants fans to know they will have plenty of options, and spots, for the fans. One of the most popular areas for fans to catch all the action on and off the course is The Hill, situated perfectly overlooking the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. “The Hill is a staple of the Shriner Children’s Open and without a doubt the place to be seen,” Lindsey says. “You can watch the closing holes at TPC Summerlin and keep up to date on all of the college and NFL football that are happening. We are looking at updating the interior of The Hill with a new layout that should showcase more TVs, while still providing great food, drinks, music and views.” He added there will be updates to other viewing areas as well. “We are updating the area around the 15th green. And we are truly establishing hole No. 17 as the best and most entertaining hospitality venue north of the WM Phoenix Open.”

Lindsey said with the world getting closer to being back to normal after a couple of rough years, the Shriners event is an ideal way for golf fans to get out and watch the world’s best tee it up.

“It’s not just for 2022,” Lindsey said. “We are now going to make sure the PGA TOUR has a home in Las Vegas through 2026. It’s just incredibly exciting to be able to continue the golf tradition here and continue to be a part of the exciting sports landscape in Las Vegas.

“Las Vegas is THE sports capital of the world,” Lindsey adds. “And the Shriners Children’s Open and the PGA TOUR are excited to be a part of it.”
